Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of a woman pouring wine

Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of a woman (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This limestone relief on a grave stela (inv. 117) shows a tavern-keeper or publican, identified as a woman from the type of dress, pouring a drink (presumably, wine) from a pitcher into a flagon or beaker. It is one of the few funerary stela at Autun showing a woman at her trade.

The sculpture was discovered in Autun before 1848. While the face and some parts of the stela are damaged or missing, details such as the hands, clothing, and the two wine vessels remain distinct.
