Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of blacksmith (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)


This sandstone stela relief from Saint-Roch shows a man holding a large set of blacksmith tongs in his left hand, and a jar in his right hand.

The inscription at the top reads MATTIO, probably the name of the blacksmith.

This grave stela from Roman Augustodunum (inv.147) is dated from the 1st-3rd century AD.
