Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of an architect

Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of architect (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This relief (inv.114), found in St. Symphorien church in Autun, shows a man named Gailus holding a mason's trowel and a set of calipers, identifying him as an architect or builder. Above is the inscription GAILUS. GETULI. / D.M., translated as "Gailus, son of Getulus, to the God of the Underworld."

Abbreviations are typical on Roman inscriptions; among the most common on funerary stela are DM, for Dis Manibus, Lord of the Underworld.

This relief is dated from the 1st to 3rd century AD.
