Autun: Gallo-Roman statue of Epona (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This limestone sculpture of Epona, the Gallic horse goddess, was found in 1922 in the commune of Sussey in Vouvres, located about 20 miles (35 km) north of Autun.

Epona was a fertility goddess as well as the deity of horses, mules, and donkeys. Her cult was widespread in both Celtic and Germanic regions of the Roman Empire in the 1st-3rd centuries AD. The same date range is assigned to this statue (inv.1154).
