Autun: Merovingian glass chalice mold with chi-rho inscription

Autun: Merovingian glass chalice mold (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This limestone mold from Autun (inv. B-2372) was designed to make glass cups or chalices. In the center is the Chi-Rho design, and around it the Latin inscription Calicem salutaris accipiam, meaning "The cup of salvation".

Such cups were used in Early Christian communion services during the Frankish or Merovingian period, which replaced the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD.
