The Cathedral of Saint Lazarus or St. Lazare was begun in AD 1120, and the structure was consecrated in 1130. It was largely finished by 1146, when the relics of Lazarus were translated from the old cathedral. The Tomb of Lazarus was built in the choir in 1170. The cathedral is celebrated for its tympanum reliefs by the 12th century master sculptor Gislebertus.

Later additions included a Gothic tower, side chapels, and the spire, which was added in the 15th century.
