Autun: Cathedral of Saint-Lazare, nave, pilaster capital

Autun: Cathedral of Saint-Lazare, nave capital (photo: Athena Review 2012)

The Cathedral of Saint-Lazare was begun in AD 1120, and the structure was consecrated in 1130. This view shows a pilaster capital with a demon head, located in the nave.

This type of relief sculpture of a beast-like demon head, dated at 1120-1135 AD, was commonly used by Romanesque sculptors at Abbey churches throughout Burgundy. Other examples may be seen in Tournus and Dijon.
