Silurian period stages

Timeline of stages in the Silurian period

The Silurian is the third geological period of the Paleozoic Era, lasting from 443-417 mya, between the Ordovician and Devonian Periods. It was originally defined by Roderick Murchison in the 1830s and 40s, based on geological formations and index fossils found in England, Wales, and Scotland.

The Early Silurian period  is usually referred to as the Llandovery epoch (443-433 mya), which includes three stages. The Middle Silurian is the Wenlock epoch (433-427 mya), ncluding two stages. The Late Silurian (427-417 mya) includes the Ludlow epoch (427-423 mya) with two stages, and the Pridoli (423-417 mya) stage.

The Silurian period saw an expansion and diversification of marine vertebrates and invertebartes. Most of the major groups of fishes probably originated by the Early Silurian.
