Guillaume Rondalet (1507-1566) was a French professor of medicine at the university of Montpellier, who also worked as an anatomist and naturalist. Rondalet’s major work was an illustrated treatise on fish and other aquatic animals, entitiled Libri de piscibus marinis (1556). This also described marine mammals such as seals and whales, and crustaceans and other invertebrates. Rondalet`s
anatomical drawing of a sea urchin is the earliest extant depiction of
an invertebrate. As a comparative anatomist, Rondalet found and
reported basic similarities between various mammals, including
dolphins, pigs, and humans. His drawings of fish and other marine
organisms also show a relatively high degree of descriptive accuracy.
