Rhinocerous drawn by Albrecht Durer (1515)
Rhinocerous drawn by Albrecht Durer in 1515 (after Gessner 1558). | ||
Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) wrote an encyclopedic four volume Historiae animalium (History of Animals, 1551-1558), which covered quadrupeds, birds, fish, and snakes. This included many illustrations, such as this 1515 drawing by the renouned Geman artist Albrecht Durer of a rhinocerous. While
aptly catching the pose of a white rhinocerous, Durer's
descriptive rendering is somewhat schematic, and not as naturalistic as
some of his other works, in showing an animal whose body appears
to be covered with armor plating.
