Edaphasaurus boanergi

Edaphasaurus boanergi was a large herbivore reptile from the Early Permian period (280 mya) who had a sail-like structure on its back made of elongated neural spines.  It was discovered in the Permian Basin of north Texas.

As a synapsid reptile, Edaphasurus  is in the group ancestral to mammals. It shares numerous features with the contemporary synapsid Dimetrodon, a carnivore who also had a sail-like projection on its back. The nearly complete skeleton of E. boanergi is housed in the Yale Peabody Museum.
