Asaphus playurus and A. kowaleski (trilobites)

Asaphus playurus and A. kowaleski (photo: )

Asaphus playurus and Asaphus kowaleski were trilobites from the Late Cambrian period.  Trilobites ("three lobes") are marine arthropods named for their three-segmented bodies. Trilobites were extremely common and widely variable in the Cambrian through Devonian periods.

These two species of Asaphus show dramatically distinct eye adaptations. A. playurus had the more primitive form of flat eyes, while A. kowaleski had eyes on the end of long stems, an adaptation serving as enhanced protection against predators in specific environments.
