Tur Abdin: Mor Cyriacus Church, S court excedra detail (1909 photo)

Tur Abdin: Mor Cyriacus church, south court detail (Bell Arch.M199 NcU)

This 1909 photo by Gertrude Bell  shows the eastern wall of the south court at the Mor Cyriacus church. It gives a detailed view of the southernmost of two exedra, showing carved decoration around the arch, and graffiti at right including Greek crosses.

Mor Cyriacus is one of a number of Syriac Christian churches dating from the 4th-6th century AD. Many have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.

Gertrude Bell first reported these sites in detail in 1909, documenting them with photography and extensive notes and maps. The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England.
