Tur Abdin: Mor Cyriacus Church, S court excedra (1909 photo)

Tur Abdin: Mor Curiacus church, S court (Bell Arch.M196 NcU)

This 1909 photo by Gertrude Bell was taken at Mor Cyriacus Church at Arnas in Tur Abdin in southeast Turkey. The image shows a cluster of three excedra in the south court of the church. Two of the arches have carved moldings.

Mor Cyriacus is one of a number of Syriac Christian churches dating from the 4th-6th century AD. Many have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.

Gertrude Bell first reported these sites in detail in 1909, documenting them with photography and extensive notes and maps. The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England.
