Tur Abdin: Mor Azaziah Church, West facade windows (1909 photo)

Tur Abdin: Mor Azaziah Church, W facade windows (Bell Arch.M203 NcU)

This  exterior view of the west facade of the Mor Azaiah church, taken by Gertrude Bell during her 1909 survey of Tur Abdin, shows three arched windows with pilasters and molding, and carved animal heads between the two lower windows.

Mor Azaziah is one of a number of Syriac Christian churches which date from the 4th-6th century AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.

Gertrude Bell first reported these sites in detail in 1909, documenting them with photography and extensive notes and maps. The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England.
