Tur Abdin: Map of early Syriac Christian churches and monasteries

Tur Abdin: Map of Early Christian Churches and Monasteries (Athena Review Image Archive)

The Tur Abdin region of southeastern Turkey contains a number of Syriac Christian monasteries and churches which date from the 4th-8th centuries AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements. Gertrude Bell first reported the sites in detail in 1909-1911 with photographs of the sites shown in this map, as well as notes and plans.

Many of these sites and villages were abandoned due to persecutions of Christians. Some churches and monasteries have recently been restored and are open to visitors.
