Tur Abdin: Deir-es-Salib Monastery, detail of exhedra molding (Bell Arch.N032 NcU)

This 1909 photo by Gertrude Bell at the Deir-es-Salib Monastery at Tur Abdin shows details of exhedra molding on the left pilaster of the portal.

Located in southeast Turkey near the Syrian border, Deir-es-Salib is one of a number of Syriac Christian monasteries and churches which date from the 4th-6th century AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.

Gertrude Bell first reported these sites in detail in 1909, documenting them with photography and extensive notes and maps. The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England.
