Tur Abdin: Deir-es-Salib Monastery, exterior portal

Tur Abdin: Deir-es-Salib Monastery, exterior portal (Bell Arch.N031 NcU)

This 1909 photo by Gertrude Bell shows a vaulted exterior portal of the Deir-es-Salib Monastery at Tur Abdin in southeastern Turkey. Relief carving covers the exterior molding of the portal arch.

Deir-es-Salib is one of a number of Syriac Christian monasteries and churches which date from the 4th-6th c. AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.

Gertrude Bell first reported these sites in detail in 1909, documenting them with photography and extensive notes and maps. The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England.
