Tur Abdin: Deir-es-Salib Monastery, exterior wall

Tur Abdin: Deir-es-Salib Monastery, exterior wall (Bell Arch.N028 NcU)

This 1909 photo by Gertrude Bell shows the exterior wall of the Deir-es-Salib Monastery at Tur Abdin in southeastern Turkey. Deir-es-Salib is one of a number of Syriac Christian monasteries and churches which date from the 4th-6th c. AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.

Many of these sites were abandoned due to persecutions of Christians. Some have recently been reopened. Gertrude Bell first reported the sites in detail in 1909

The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England..
