Map of Roman Forts in Syria

Roman Forts in Syria (after Poidebard 1934; Kennedy & Riley 1990; Athena Review Image Archive)

This map is based primarily on aerial reconnaissances conducted in the 1920s and 1930s by Antoine Poidebard (1934) and his colleagues, which identified dozens of Roman forts and other ancient sites.  Roman roads and Roman names for towns are derived from the Barrington Atlas of Greek and Roman Sites (2002). Commentary on many of the sites is provided by Kennedy and Riley in Rome's Desert Frontier From the Air (1990).

The diagonal purple line called the Strata Diocletiana indicates the eastward edge of the Roman frontier or limes, with forts lining the edge of the Syrian desert up to the Euphrates River.
