Grammichelle: Shrine of Demeter, alabastron votive figurine

A cave shrine of Demeter was found near the town of Grammichelle, in the province of Catania. The shrine contained terracotta votive figurines and anthropomophic vessels such as this fragment of an alabastron, or perfume jar.
The spout is in the shape of a polos or headdress, suggesting a goddess or priestess. The figurine dates from the 4th-3rd century BC.
