Syracuse: Sanctuary of Demeter, alabastron votive figurine

Syracuse: alabastron votive figurine (Mus.Orsi Syracuse; Photo: Athena Review 2004)

This mold-made alabastron or perfune jar is in the form of a kore or young woman wearing a robe. The jar spout resembles a headdress or polos, associated with priestesses or goddesses. The item was found in the shrine of Demeter and Persephone.

The female figure is shown holding a dove-like bird. This may link the figurine with  Persephone, and its use as a votive offering.
