Syracuse: The Greek Theater, skene (stage)

Syracuse: Skene or stage of the Greek Theater (Photo: Athena Review 2004)

During the Roman period of Syracuse (after 21 BC), the theater was modified to enable the performance of spectacles, including circus games, as well as dramatic performances. The lowest rows of seats were removed for gladiator contests.

This view shows the skene, or stage area. Today, only parts of the skene and the orchestra remain.
