Selinunte: Temple E, metope relief of Acteon and Artemis

Selinunte: Temple E, Acteon & Artemis metope (Mus.Arch.Palermo; Photo:Athena Review 2004)

In this relief,  the goddess Artemis is shown watching Acteon, a Theban leader, being devoured by his own dogs. Acteon has been punished by Artemis, who turns him into a stag. In one version of the myth,  Acteon had surprised Artemis during her bath.

In another version, he claimed to be a better archer than the goddess. In either case, he must face mortal punishment. The relief dates from the 5th century BC.
