Selinunte: Acropolis, Temple C, metope relief of Athena, Perseus & Medusa

Selinunte: Temple C, Metope relief of Athena (Arch.Mus.Palermo; Photo: Athena Review 2004)

This relief of Athena, Perseus, and Medusa dates from the mid-6th century BC. Medusa is shown being killed by Perseus, as she has just given birth to Chrysaor and Pegasus, both sired by Poseidon. Medusa holds Pegasus in her arms as a newborn colt.

Athena, at left, is portrayed in the myths of Perseus as his protector. Traces of red paint from the temple exterior remain on the relief.
