Selinunte: Development of the Greek Acropolis (650-409 BC)

Selinunte: Acropolis development phases (Athena Review Image Archive)

The Acropolis development at Selinunte during its Greek period from 650-409 BC had three main phases. During Phase I (650-580 BC), The first enclosing walls or fortifications (tenemos) followed the main roads. The first temples were simple megarons or halls.

In Phase II (560-500 BC), Temples C and D, each with a separate altar, replaced central megarons. An embankment and stoa were also built.

Phase III (500-409 BC) saw the further expansion of the tenemos walls on the east. At the same time, new temples A and O were built just south of the tenemos wall.

In 409 BC, the site was taken over and rebuilt by Carthage.
