Agrigento: Temple of the Dioscuri in the Sanctuary

Agrigento: Temple of Castor and Pollux (photo: Athena Review 2004)

The so called "Temple of the Dioscuri " (Castor and Pollux),  located in the Sanctuary of the Underworld Divinities, is now recognized as part of the Sanctuary devoted to its primary deities (Demeter and Persephone). All that remains of the temple is its northwest corner with four columns and an entablature, shown in this image. This is actually a modern reconstruction from the early 19th century, created using pieces from various other temples.

The temple itself measures 31  × 13.4 m, and was a Doric peripteral temple with 6 x 13 columns, dating to about the mid-5th c. BC.
