Agrigento: Sanctuary of the Underworld Divinities, altars

Agrigento: Foundations at the Sanctuary of Underworld Divinities (photo: Athena Review 2004)

This view shows portionsof the Sanctuary of the Cthonic (Underworld) Divinities, devoted to the worship of Demeter, Persephone, and Kore. Features visible in this image include a large round altar foundation. There are also stonework enclosures around sacrificial pits, where votive figurines of the goddesses and other offerings were placed.

At the rear of the image is the so called "Temple of the Dioscuri " (Castor and Pollux),  retaining is its northwest corner with four columns and an entablature,  actually a modern reconstruction from the early 19th century. It was a Doric temple six columns wide and thirteen columns long, dating from the mid 5th century BC.
