Agrigento: Sphinxes and other motifs on ritual vessel (6th-5th c. BC)

Agrigento: Motifs on Leuterion (Mus.Agrigento; photo Athena Review 2004)

Frequent examples have been found in Agrigento of reliefs stamped on the rims of louteria,  large basins on a pedestal used for ritual washing. These date to the 6th-5th centuries BC. Many date to the construction of the Temple of Zeus in 480 BC.

This relief from a louterion shows repeated symbolic motifs of sphinxes, lotus flowers, a rooster, and a man on a horse.
