Agrigento: Relief on handle of hydria (3rd-1st c. BC)

Agrigento: Relief on hydria handle (Mus.Agrigento; photo Athena Review 2004)

This relief of a pot or flagon with a loop handle was used as a decoration of the handle of a hydria, a water-carrying jar with three handles. A stamp-like mold with the design was pressed into the handle's clay while it was still wet or plastic.

The relief comes from the Hellenistic settlement area excavations at Heraclea Minoa, and dates from the 3rd-1st century BC.
