Agrigento: Relief of centauromachia on ritual vessel (6th-5th c. BC)

Agrigento: Relief of Centauromachia (Mus.Agrigento; photo Athena Review 2004)

Frequent examples have been found in Agrigento of reliefs stamped on the rims of louteria,  basins used for ritual washing. These date to the 6th-5th centuries BC.

This relief from a louterion shows the battle with the centaurs (centauromachia), a frequent theme in Late Archaic and Classic period art.
