Agrigento: Red figure jar with marine motifs (4th c. BC)

Agrigento: Red figure jar with marine motifs (Mus.Agrigento; photo Athena Review 2004)

This 4th century jar with a cover and two handles (a large pyxis, or a skyphos with a lid) has well-preserved red-figure paintings by an unknown artist. The cover is  painted with several kinds of fish, as well as mythical sea horses and a nereid.

The exterior wall of the bowl has a painted scene of a young man seated on a rock with a basket, facing a young woman.
