Agrigento: Standing female figurine with mold (5th-4th c. BC)

Agrigento: Offeratory female figurine with mold (Mus.Agrigento; photo Athena Review 2004)

This figurine of a standing female holding an offering (C 265) dates to the late 5th or early 4th century BC. Beside it, at left, is the mold that produced it.

Terracotta molds enabled ancient craftsmen to produce a series of figurines, masks, and reliefs from relatively few originals modeled by hand. Such molds have been discovered during several excavations at Agrigento, including in the Sanctuary of the Underworld Divinities (directed by Pirro Marconi), and along the city wall, in excavations directed by Pietro Griffo, in which were found the remains of kilns from ancient pottery and figurine workshops related to the sacred area.
