Agrigento: Boston Phiale Painter, Perseus and Andromeda (440-430 BC)

Agrigento: Boston  Phiale Painter, Perseus and Andromeda (Mus.Agrigento; photo Athena Review 2004)

In this white calyx crater by the Boston Phile Painter (inv.120693), side A of the vessel shows the scene of Perseus just before he frees Andromeda. The vase, dating from 440-430 BC and recovered from a burial, is considered one of the most important ceramic finds at Agrigento.  Perseus, at left, rest on a rock, holding two spears. At right Andromeda, wearing a phrygian cap and tied to three poles, is in obvious distress.

The simple but elegant linear style of the artist is reminiscent of that used on white ground lekythoi by the Achilles Painter.
