Tivoli:  Temple of Vesta reliefs (1682 drawing)

Tivoli: Reliefs on the Temple of Vesta (Desgodetz 1682)

The so-called Temple of Vesta, dating from the late 1st century BC, overlooks a cliff from the acropolis at Tivoli. The round temple has Corinthian columns, and a frieze with floral wreaths, rosettes, and bucrania or cow heads, such as shown here

These details of the reliefs of the frieze and capital are shown in a 1682 drawing by French architect Antoine Desgodetz (1653–1728). In 1682, Desgodetz published a series of drawings with measurements, entitled Les edifices Antiques de Rome (Paris), which included his studies of the Temple of Vesta.
