Tivoli: Hadrian's Villa, walls near Piazza Aurea (Bell 1910; Gertrude Bell Archive 081 NcU)

This 1910 photograph by Gertrude Bell shows an arch segment or squinch at the juncture of two massive brick walls. Seen at the top of the image, the squinch is a diagonal element forming a transition between a square corner and a round or domed structure

Bell reported a number of such elements in her accounts of Near Eastern sites, showing a pervasive influence of Roman building methods in the Byzantine and Early Christian eras.
