Tivoli:  Hadrian's Villa, Basilica cross vaulting (1910 photo)

Tivoli: Hadrian's Villa, Basilica (Bell 1910; Gertrude Bell Archive 084 NcU)

This 1910 photograph by Gertrude Bell of the Basilica at Hadrian's Villa shows an area with cross vaulting. The walls are comprised of opus reticulatum (diagonal layers of diamond-shaped tiles), intersperced with horizontal bands of thin bricks or tiles, a technique also used in stone masonry by Roman builders throughout the Empire.  The Basilica was built ca. AD 125-135.
