Rome: The Arch of Titus
Arch of Titus (Athena Review Image Archive [ARIA]).
This
well-preserved arch at the eastern end of the Roman Forum was erected
in AD 81 by the Flavian emperor Domitian, commemorating Roman
military victories in Judea under his brother Titus and his father
Vespacian. The Arch of Titus was built soon after the completion of the
nearby Colosseum.
The single archway, noted for its fine
proportions, contains an inscription and relief sculptures of Roman
victory celebrations or Triumphs. The photo dates from the 1890's.
