Rome: Via Appia, Tomb of the Gordiani (BSR Parker Archive)

These images show the front of back of a tomb at the Villa Gordiana, dating from ca. AD 240. The tomb was located in a thermae or bathhouse on the via Appia. The thermae held figurative mural paintings which may be seen in the lower image.

In the 1970s,excavations revealed more of this and other buildings at the Villa Gordiani, including remains of an Early Christian church from the time of Constantine I (early 4th centuryAD).
