Rome: Via Appia, Vigna Randanini Catacomb (1864 photo)

Rome: Via Appia, Vigna Randali Catacomb (BSR Parker Archive)

On the Appian Way were a number of ancient catacombs for both Christian and Jewish burials.

This albumen print by Parker, taken in 1864-6 with a magnesium light, shows a painted cubiculum or room in the extensive Jewish catacombs at Vigna Randanini. This underground burial zone is near the Christian catacombs of San Sebastian on the via Appia.

The Jewish catacombs contain a number of paintings showing birds, menorahs, animals, and even human figures or deities. This one includes peacocks with their chicks.
