On the Appian Way were a number of ancient catacombs for both Christian and Jewish burials.

This albumen print by Parker, taken in 1864-6, shows a Greek grave inscription witha pair of  incised hearts from the Jewish catacombs at Vigna Randanini. This underground burial zone is located near the Christian catacombs of San Sebastian.
