Rome: Via Appia, Arch of Drusus (1868 photo)

Rome: Via Appia, Arch of Drusus (Parker 1869-9;BSR Parker Archive)

The so-called Arch of Drusus is located beside the Porta Sebastiana, at the beginning of the Appian Way. It  was built during the Severan period, and supported an aqueduct built to serve the nearby Baths of Caracalla.

This albumen print by Parker shows the deep entrenchment (fosse) of the ancient Via Appia through cultivated fields on either side.
