Rome: Via Appia, Arch of Drusus (1864 photo)

Rome: Via Appia, Arch of Drusus (Simelli 1864-6;BSR Parker Archive)

In this 1864-6 albumen print by Simelli, the arch of Drusus is seen through the adjacent Porta Sebastiana, looking southeast along the Appian Way. The brickwork on top of the arch contained the spicum (water channel or culvert) of the aqueduct serving the Baths of Caracalla.

Twin Corinthian columns may be seen on either side of the arch, in this photo by Carlo Simelli. In the distance are farmhouses lining the ancient roadbed of the via Appia, several meters below the adjacent fields.
