Rome: Forum, Plan of Temple of Venus and Rome (1515 drawing)

Rome: Forum, Plan of Temple of Venus and Rome (Comer 1515; Ashby BSR 1902, fg.23)

This early plan by Andreas Comer shows the double temple of Venus and Rome, located at the end of the Sacra Via near the Colosseum. It is labelled Temple of the Sun and Moon (TENPLA [sic] SOLIS ET LUNAE), then a traditional name for the structure.

The plan shows a double flight of stairs ascending to the roof of each temple. Here, the stairway is larger than in a later plan by Lanciani (1897). The temple was built by Hadrian over the vestibule of the Domus Aurea.
