Rome: Forum, Temple of Saturn (1850 photo)

Pompeii: Temple of Saturn in the Forum (photo: Flacheron Archive 1850)

This view from the Capitoline Hill shows columns of the Temple of Saturn. At the time this early photo was taken, excavations had recently begun at the Roman Forum. Much of it, however, remained a pasture.

The photographer was Frederick Flacheron (1813-1883), a French pioneer in the documentary use of calotype prints. He published a collection of images of Rome in 1850.
