Rome: Temples of Saturn and Vespacian (Richebourgh 1844)


Pierre Ambrose Richebourg made a series of daguerrotypes of ancient Roman structures, published in 1844. This image of the columns and lintels of the Temples of Saturn (left) and Vespacian (right) documents that they had their lower portions exposed by excavations by that date.

Richebourg later took the first photos of catacombs and other Early Christian sites, working with the archaeologist de Rossi.
