Rome: Forum, Temple of Hercules Victor (1850 photo)

Rome: The Temple of Hercules Victor (photo: Flacheron Archive 1850)

The so-called Temple of Vesta, located near the east bank of the Tiber, is one of the best preserved of ancient Roman structures, as shown in this 1850 calotype by Flacheron.

The Temple, whose round form is of Greek design, was built in the late 2nd century BC. While its round form caused an original attribution to the Goddess Vesta, it is now identified as the Temple of Hercules Victor.

The temple is located within the Forum Boarium, or cattle market, a commercial and money-lending center during the Republican and Imperial periods.
