Rome: Temple of Portunus (1757 etching)

Rome: The Temple of Portunus (Piranesi 1757)

This Piranesi drawing faces south across the area of the Forum Boarium or cattle market, dating from the Republican era. At left is the Temple of Portunus, then called the Temple of Fortuna Virilis, and at right, the round Temple of Hercules Victor (then called either the Temple of Cibele or Vesta).

The church tower in the background is Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Beyond it, in the far background, is The Aventine Hill. Just to the right of this view is the Tiber River, near the Cloaca Maxima outlet.
