Rome: Forum, Temple of Antoninus and Faustina (1850 photo)

Rome: Temple of Antoninus and Faustina in Forum (photo: Caneva Archive 1850)

The temple, located in the Forum, dates from the reign of Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161) and was dedicated by him and his wife, the empress Faustina. This 1850 calotype print is by Antonio Caneva, a member of the early Roman photographic school of the 1850s-60s, which also included Flancheron and Anderson.

At  left is an oxcart, testament to the use of the Forum at that time as a cattle pasture.
