Rome: Forum, Temple of Antoninus and Faustina (1550s drawing)

Rome: Forum, Temple of Antoninus and Faustina (Ligorio 1550s; Middleton 1888 fg.9)

This drawing from ca. 1550 shows the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina (built AD 138-161) with its entire cella intact; today the back of the cella is missing. In his notes, Ligorio states that the temple steps were dug up to use at St Peters. In the process, reliefs were found of both nereids and twelve deities.

Pirro Ligorio was a major architect in the mid to late 16th century and superintendent of Roman Antiquities for successive Popes. This drawing is from a collection in the Bodleian Library at Oxford (Canonici Ms138).
